Australian workplaces – First Aid Courses

In Australia, workplaces must follow occupational health and safety regulations – amongst others, these specify that businesses and care organisations must have personnel on staff with current, recognised workplace-approved CPR and first aid training.


First Aid Brisbane offer workplace courses for providing CPR & AED, Basic Life Support and First Aid to meet Nationally Recognized Training (NRT) and Vocational Education and Training (VET) requirements for several units of competency from the Health Training Package. The most popular courses are:

 HLTAID001 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation
 HLTAID002 Provide basic emergency life support
 HLTAID003 Provide first aid
 HLTAID004 Provide an emergency first aid response in an 
            education and care setting
 HLTAID005 Provide First Aid in Remote Situations
 HLTAID006 Provide advanced first aid
 HLTAID007 Provide advanced resuscitation

In Australia, it is recommended by ASQA, ARC "Australian Resus Council and NTA first aid training is valid for three years and require annual CPR refreshers.



This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) Guidelines. This unit applies to all workers who may be required to provide CPR in a range of situations, include community and workplace settings. Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines indicate that a CPR qualification should be renewed every 12 months.


HLTAID002 Provide basic emergency life support


This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to recognise and respond to life-threatening emergencies in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) Guidelines. This unit applies to all workers who may be required to provide an emergency response in a range of situations, include community and workplace settings.



This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to a casualty. The unit applies to all workers who may be required to provide a first aid response in a range of situations, include community and workplace settings. First Aid qualification should be renewed every 3 years.


This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to infants, children and adults. The unit applies to educators and support staff working within an education and care setting who are required to respond to a first aid emergency, including asthmatic and anaphylactic emergencies. This unit of competency may contribute towards approved first aid, asthma and anaphylaxis training under the Education and Care Services National Law, and the Education and Care Services National Regulations (2011).

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide first aid response and emergency life support to a casualty in a remote and/or isolated situation. The unit applies to workers who may be required to prepare for and provide a first aid response in locations beyond the reach of timely medical assistance.



This unit deals with the skills and knowledge required to provide an advanced first aid response, including management of the incident and other first aiders, until the arrival of medical or other assistance. The unit applies to workers who may be required to provide, coordinate and manage a first aid response across a range of complex situations, include community and workplace settings.



This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to use specialised equipment in the provision of resuscitation in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines. This unit applies to workers who may be required to use specialised equipment to provide resuscitation in a range of complex situations, include community and workplace settings.


HLTAID008 Manage first aid services and resources

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to establish, maintain and facilitate the provision of appropriate first aid in the workplace. The unit applies to workers in nominated occupational first aid or management roles. 22298VIC Course in Basic Oxygen Administration Students of the Course in Basic Oxygen Administration will be able to recognise and respond to emergency situations that require the application of oxygen therapy or oxygen resuscitation, as appropriate, until the arrival of medical assistance.


22282VIC Course in the Management of Asthma Risks and Emergencies in the Workplace Successful completion of this course will provide students with the knowledge and skills to be able to develop an asthma management plan and provide asthma related first aid interventions in the workplace.


22300VIC Course in First Aid Management of Anaphylaxis

Students of the 22300VIC Course in First Aid Management of Anaphylaxis will be able to identify the triggers, signs and symptoms of allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis and develop risk management and risk minimisation strategies for anaphylaxis.


This includes the development and implementation of pre-emergency risk assessment/management and the development of individual anaphylaxis management plans. Further, students will be able to provide an emergency first aid response to an individual experiencing anaphylaxis, until the arrival of medical assistance. This includes standard first aid procedures and the specific skills and knowledge to administer adrenaline using an adrenaline autoinjector.
